Consumer digital technology

Flip Mino Rolling Demo from Andy Ihnatko on Vimeo.

Andy Ihnakto reviews the new Flip video camera. What’s interesting here is about 12-13 minutes in he discusses the rise of consumer digital technology. This is the sector where people are happy not to have professional-level features and quality, but just want to have fun. Arguably, it’s why Apple scored a success with the iPod – most of the criticisms tend to be ‘it doesn’t have an FM radio’ or ‘it doesn’t have a video camera’ or ‘it doesn’t do this that and the other’ missing the point that these things only matter to geeks who probably never use those features anyway…

It’s a salient point for any designer: fitting every feature in under the sun doesn’t guarantee people will buy it. As Andy points out, the Flip is only a few dollars cheaper than ‘better’ video cameras with more features. But that’s missing the point. The Flip, he says, is fun.
